Modern Metal and Vinyl Vine Trellis Alternatives to Wood
I love growing vines, primarily because there are so many different types that offer beautiful flowers of all different colors and sizes. One of the problems in growing vines, however, are the types of trellises one can use. Sure, there are plenty of inexpensive Wood ones available at your local box store but do you really want your beautiful vine growing on an ugly wood trellis? I know I don’t! Sure, wood trellises are affordable but after a few short years, they turn gray and ugly. Not only that, but they are so dated it’s not even funny. So today, we will look at some cool modern metal and vinyl trellises that will last forever!
Before we examine some cool metal trellises, lets get one concern out of the way. The first thing that came to my mind was whether my vines could withstand the heat collected by metal trellises. So let me set your mind at ease, while metal trellises can get hot to the touch, at least human touch, vines don’t seem to mind this heat. You see, their stems are extremely durable. Unlike our poor little fingers, a vine stem doesn’t mind a little heat. Even delicate vines like Clematis don’t seem to mind hot trellises. If you’re still concerned, how about some Vinyl trellises? They last forever and don’t get any hotter than wood. With that out of the way, lets look at some cool metal trellis options shall we?
Modern White Vinyl Trellis
Dura-Trel Wellington Vinyl Wall Trellis
Here we have the very cool and fashionable Wellington Vinyl Wall Trellis that measures 74″ tall by 28″ wide. I really like the modern look of this trellis. Not only does it provide a great support for sturdier, vigorous vines but it also ads a nice accent to the garden. I really like the modern offset grid this trellis brings to the table.
This one can be used as either a wall trellis or a free standing trellis that can be used for strong growing vines. Also works great for climbing roses. The white back drop really makes colorful flowers pop!
The downside of this trellis is that you probably can’t use it for vines like Clematis as they can’t wind themselves on the thick grid supports. Also tough to use on vines like the passion vine as they prefer to wind their tendrils around darker objects.
Overall, this is a great trellis option that’s quite affordable. Did I mention it comes with a 2yr warranty? There’s some vines it won’t work with but if will work great on climbing roses and will add a beautiful touch to any garden.
Modern Metal Fan Trellis
Austram Fan Metal Wall Trellis 48in
The Austram Fan trellis uses this classic yet modern design yet uses ultimate metal durability with epoxy UV resistant coating for the ultimate lasting beauty. I really like this design because not only does it work extremely well, it looks great! I’ve used several wooden ones but hate how they look terrible after only a few short years so this one is an awesome substitute.
This trellis can be used as either a wall or fence installed structure. I like the fact that it’s dark in color since choosy vines like the passion vine will be attracted to it. That being said, it’s only 4′ tall so something like a passion vine will engulf it without a problem and still have much room to grow. That being said, there aren’t many trellises that can even hope to contain a passion vine!
Perfect wall trellis for your Clematis vines as the trellis members are not terribly thick. Clematis vines can easily wind themselves on members that are 1″ or thinner so this one fits the bill nicely for such vines.
This is an excellent and pretty much forever lasting trellis. I also like the price $29 price tag which all things considered, isn’t much costlier than the cedar variety since this one will outlast the wood counterpart by centuries!
Mushroom Freestanding Trellis
Here’s a rather interesting one if your tastes lean towards the abstract! This free standing mushroom shaped trellis is great form moving those vines away from the wall into a free standing work of yard art. Can you imagine this thing covered by your favorite vine? Not only is it very cool looking but it measures over 6 feet tall so it will make quite an impact in your yard.
The thing I really like about this trellis, besides it’s modern form, is the fact that it will work with most perennial vines. The members are thin enough for Clematis and it’s also dark for those particular vines. Of course, it’s made out of indestructible wrought iron so it will be around for your grand kids grand kids to enjoy.
It’s a bit pricey but considering the structure, I think it’s well worth the money. If you’re looking for something that’s super unique and will make your garden pop, this is probably the one you are looking for.
